100% chance of weather

I have this nifty dashboard widget (it's a Mac thang) that at the push of a button zooms the current local radar onto my computer desktop. And the radar my Mac is zooming at me right this moment is quite interesting. If you could see it in motion, you would see that all those little red and yellow spots are moving in such a way as to suggest they might be thinking about converging right on SPI. At the very least we could see rain. Tonight or tomorrow.
We need rain. I mean we really need rain. We need rain right now - hard and quick and get it over in time for our MeetFRED open-house garden party on Thursday. Hard, but not so hard that it knocks the bejesus out of the sand sculpture I have really been enjoying working on in the backyard sandbox. Just enough to give the plants a good deep drink and put a dewy glow on everything and bring joy and cause for celebration to farmers, birds and the rest of the flora and fauna. And then go away, By 5:30 thursday afternoon.
That's what would happen of I was queen of everything, anyway.

Girls Gone Wild released back into civilization
SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TX—In what wildlifestyle reformation volunteers are calling a "positive step," the first group of rehabilitated Girls Gone Wild were released back into the civilized world Monday, and early signs indicate that they are adjusting smoothly, according to the director of the group responsible for their rescue.
Great story in the Onion... ;-)
Escaped Prisoner on SPI!

A few days ago while I was staying at the Houston Hyatt I watched
this video on Salon and chuckled at the escaped prisoner pulling the wool over the cop's eyes.
Got home late last night to find out that this same murderer has in fact been spotted on... South Padre Island! Yikes!
You can read more about him
here, and if you meet someone at at local watering hole that uses the phrases "yeah, yeah, yeah," "yep, yep, yep," or "nope, nope, nope" you should probably give the local cops a call....

The Drum

The SOB's seem prodigious busy these days, so I'll post another about what we call "the drum." Now this is some good clean Island fun, getting together in a circle and playing away in the cool evening breeze ... so far no "Mathew McConaughy" incidents! [Matt was caught in Austin playing his bongos au naturel, so to speak ... I think he was squeezed and released.] Oh yes, and sometimes I bring along my battle ax there, which I also play like a drum ... Amazu says it's all good as long as I don't end up with splinters. Happy Easter and Semana Santa, y'all.
Bonfire Anyone?

Thanks to Jim Hoff for donating his scrap construction wood for the Island Bonfire Effort. As you may or may not know, Jim has had to sell his house to move to Phoenix due to family obligations, so I guess I did him a favor (and I get to keep the long boards!). I promised a real SPI "Tiki" bonfire out there just past Access 6 somewhere ... anyone with ideas on dates and places and the Tiki can hit me at:

Kiskadee

I talked with Mars Bear today and I mentioned my “Yeek-Woo” birds, which seemed to be two now, and she automatically said something like “oh, you saw a Kiskadee?” After months of looking at all those descriptions of warblers, because of all the yellow and similar characteristics, my quest for bird identification is over.
By the way, my Kiskadee do not sound at all like the name suggests, but still to me sounds like “Yeek-Woo.” OK, sometimes like “Yeek-woo-who,” but not very often. We bark at each other and the mockingbirds bark at us both and it is quite a riot here on somber Oleander Street as I walk the two dogs, with two cats and three birds following our every step.
On our royal processions up and down the street, the Kiskadee clears the way of all the nasty grackles, which endears me to them even more. Grackles are those offensive blackish birds with absolutely no redeeming value, swearing like sailors and cooting all day long, probably drunk on rotten berries. “Bad birds” I tell the lunging dogs and swooping Kiskadee, “off with their heads, I say!”
It is quite something to envision. Thanks, Mars Bear!
